There have been many times in my life where I thought I knew what I wanted and charged full speed ahead.  I did not stop to ask myself some important questions that would have given me clarity.  By the time I did cease long enough to organize my mind, I was not where I wanted to be. Nor taking my business in the direction I wanted it to go.

One of the instances where I acted before I truly understood what I wanted was when I started freelance writing.  In the vast amount of research I did before becoming a freelance writer, I observed that many writers also did social media marketing. Of course I thought that was what I should do as well. After a while I realized that all I wanted to do was write, at least at that stage of my career.  I love writing social media posts but I was not interested in using social media to market products or services for companies.  Although I learned many things in that process, I was divided in my focus between something I loved (writing) and something I did because I thought that was what I was supposed to do (social media marketing). I was frustrated and felt uneasy.

One thing I have come to learn about myself is that when I feel frustrated and uneasy, it is because I am not on the right path. I failed to do one of the most important things I should have done before launching my business; organize my mind.  Now, after just focusing on writing, I am ready to do some social media marketing. I took the time to learn more about the social media platforms and currently enjoy the marketing I do for some of the companies I work for. I had to take the time to stop and understand what it was I wanted to do and when I wanted to do it.  I wrote this post because I want to help you circumvent the frustration of going in the opposite direction of success and happiness.

Organize your mind.  What is your dream? Until you can answer this question, everything will be a mess. There is a vast amount of directions that you can take.  We live in a world where anything is possible; which is nice but can get a bit overwhelming.  That is why you need to ask yourself a few key questions and WRITE THE ANSWERS DOWN. I find that if I don’t write it down, I am unsure of my answers, I do not follow through very well, and I just plain old forget what my answers are. Here are 3 important questions you should know the answers to before you start on your journey to clarity.

Where do you see yourself/business in a month, a year, five years from now?

If you don’t know your end goal, how can you know what road to follow? If you have lost track of your dream, what do you need to do to find it again? It is easy to get lost in distractions and the busyness of life.  Sometimes it only takes a second of taking your eyes off the horizon to veer off course.  Know where you want to be and keep moving in that direction.  It does not matter whether it happens quickly or slowly; as long as it happens and you are happy with the pace that you’ve set.

If you are headed towards fulfilling your goals, then make sure you know what you need to do to continue in that course. And that you are heading there in a speed that satisfies you. Don’t be unreasonable and think you should get there faster than is possible. For instance, you cannot pay a $75,000 debt in one year when you are only making $50,000. Be patient with yourself and your circumstances. And most importantly, don’t give up!

What or Whom makes you feel alive or happy? What aspect of your business gets you excited?

It is such a waste of your precious time to spend only 10% of it happy.  It is one thing when you have to go through momentary unhappiness to gain something better, but another when those moments are it. If you are going to live your life and run a business, do something that is going to make you fell fulfilled and joyful at the end of the day.

What do you want to focus your energy on?

As a teenager I started a business with my sister and two of our friends.  We did miscellaneous work for neighbors and friends of our family members. We did things such as mow lawns, wash cars, babysit, and clean windows. At first, everything was great; we were making money and spending time together doing it. After a while, two of the partners were tired of taking up their weekends working, so they stopped being a part of it.  My sister and I continued for a little longer before we realized that, although we did not mind the work, we did not want to spend our weekends working and not spending time with anyone else.  We realized it was more important to us to develop friendships then to make money.  That was a great lesson to learn, especially at such a young age.  Decide now what is most important to you then focus on it.  It could be relationships, health, revenue, or talents.  The important thing is that you need to stop, ponder, pray/meditate, and plan.

What has helped you in the past to organize your mind?
